We are all sports dentists- Are you prepared?

You may not realize it, but every dentist is a Sports Dentist. This exciting presentation will provide an overview of sports dentistry topics from a team of ASD-trained dentists with a vast experience in amateur sports, junior/university sports, and professional sports (NHL, WNBA). Various ways to prevent dental issues among athletes will be discussed, as will emergency dental protocols. The differences in treatment between the professional field of play and your office will be compared. Find out what's in the dental trauma bag of a Team Dentist! The Academy for Sports Dentistry Guidelines for properly fabricating and fitting a custom mouthguard will be presented. New and exciting advances will also be highlighted, such as Neuromuscular Dentistry, 3D-printed mouthguards, Smart mouthguards, and Bite-correcting/postural intra-oral appliances/mouthguards.

Dr. E. Jan Chithalen B.SC., D.D.S., F.A.S.D., F.I.C.C.M.O attended McMaster University in Hamilton, received DDS in 1994 from the University of Toronto, and in 1990 received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology.

Dr. Chithalen holds the "trifecta" of privilege as the Team Dentist for the Hamilton Tiger- Cats CFL Football team, the Toronto Rock Lacrosse and the Brantford Bulldogs OHL Hockey Team.

Dr. Hans Stasiuk D.M.D maintains a General Dentistry Practice in Portage la Prairie, MB. He has held numerous roles with the ASD, including President, Secretary, Editor, and Symposium Chair. Dentist - 1999 Pan Am Games and 2002 NAIG. Team Dentist - Portage Terriers Hockey Club. He teaches sports dentistry at the University of Manitoba and is an Undergraduate Pediatric Dentistry Clinic instructor. Dr. Stasiuk's commitment to the Academy for Sports Dentistry began in 1996 when he attended his first ASD Symposium in Minneapolis. His dedication was recognized in 1999 when he was appointed as the ASD Website Coordinator and the Canadian liaison for the ASD.

Dr. Byron Blasco, originally from Toronto, has practiced dentistry in Las Vegas since 1985. His passion for sports and dentistry has parlayed into providing care to 8 teams in Las Vegas. including the Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Aces. Having a passion for continuing to play hockey, he has hoisted the Stanley Cup, and his championship ring is a treasured jewel. He is the immediate past president of ASD.

Dr Michael Salyzyn has been in private practice since 1988 in Halifax. He has a passion for facial protection/performance and dental trauma treatment. He has been a dentist for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the IIHF, the IOC, FIBV as well as Usports final 8 in Hockey and Basketball. He was the Chief Dental Officer for the Canada Winter games 2011 and recently the 2024 North America Indigenous games. He is presently the dental consultant for St Mary's University Athletics and the President for the Academy for Sports Dentistry.
