President's Message

I am honored to serve as president of the Academy for Sports Dentistry [ASD]. I am happy to do my small part for an organization that has done so much for me. I started doing sports dentistry in 1983 when a friend suggested I get involved with a local university. In 1991, I did the smart thing and I joined the Academy for Sports Dentistry. Since then, my athletes and I have reaped the benefits. The knowledge, expertise, and confidence I have gained made me a better dentist. The friendships I have made will last a lifetime.
My two main goals for the upcoming year are to gain more recognition for the ASD and sports dentistry and to continue to grow our membership. Great strides have been made in gaining acceptance for sports dentistry in general and the Academy for Sports dentistry in particular. Dentists serve as team and tournament dentists and are respected members of the sports medicine team. Athletic trainers, physicians, athletic directors, and coaches value our knowledge and appreciate the service we provide. This was not always the case.
The ASD continues our relationships with the American Dental Association [ADA], National Association of Athletic trainers [NATA], International Association of Dental Traumatology [IADT], among others. These alliances are very important to the ASD and we strive to strengthen them. The ASD continues to reach out to other professional groups to form new relationships and increase our exposure. We, as members of the ASD, can increase the ASD presence by getting involved with local sports teams. Encourage your friends and colleagues to become team dentists. This is a great practice builder, a way to give back to the community, and a very rewarding experience.
A growing and vital membership is essential to any organization and membership recruitment is its lifeblood. The ASD is fortunate to have many members who lecture nationally and internationally and they do a great job promoting the ASD and recruiting members. Dr. Jeff Lloyd, Membership Chair, has done a tremendous job in growing the ASD roles. The ASD website, journal, and Symposium all serve as recruiting tools. However, it is up to each one of us to promote the ASD and recruit new members. Be proud of the ASD and share the ASD with your friends and colleagues.
The Academy for Sports Dentistry continues its partnership with the Smile Foundation. Thanks to the work of ASD members Drs, Jeff Hoy, Steve Mills, Emilio Canal and many others and Mr. Sal Rodas of the Smile Foundation, a DVD Team Dentist Course is being developed. Completion of this Course is essential to anyone wishing to become a team dentist and it is also one of the requirements for being an ASD Certified Team Dentist. Thanks to the Smile Foundation for promoting the Academy for Sports Dentistry.
Remember to “Save the Date”. The next ASD Symposium is June 21 – 23 2012 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minneapolis is a great place to visit. The city offers a combination of natural beauty and sophistication. Upscale shopping, a thriving theater district, sidewalk dining and much more surrounded by 22 lakes. The hard work of General Chair Dr. Mike Nanne and his committee, Drs. Doug Lambert, Mark Roettger, Jean Merry, and Ed Bick, insures a great Symposium. For the first time, lectures will specifically address the “Female Athlete”. Women athletes make up an increasing percentage of the athletes we see, making this a very appropriate topic. Dr. Nestor Cohenca, a nationally recognized speaker, will present on ” Dental Trauma”. Mr. Lou Nanne, a former NHL player, will talk on “Sports and the Athlete”. For more information on topics and speakers go to the ASD website. Plan to attend and bring a friend.
I look forward to serving you, the members of the Academy for Sports Dentistry. I am fortunate to be supported by an outstanding board made up of dedicated people. Feel free to contact us with comments and suggestions. We all share a common goal – to make the Academy for Sports Dentistry stronger and more viable.
